When dealing with trauma patients, doctors are often in a race against the clock. Many trauma victims simply bleed to death before doctors are able to treat their injuries. Inducing extreme hypothermia in these patients, however, could buy doctors some time.

In P ittsburgh, Pennsylvania, patients who have lost so much blood that their hearts have stopped beating will soon be candidates for an experimental hypothermia treatment that involves bringing their body temperatures down to as low as 50 degrees. Trauma surgeons hope that the treatment will stave off brain and organ damage long enough for them to patch up and revive these patients
