The so-called agreement between the Russian Federation and the self-proclaimed Republic of Abkhazia on alliance and strategic partnership, signed on November 24, 2014 in Sochi, threatens regional security and will have a negative impact on the efforts to stabilize this conflict zone in the Caucasus region. The agreement violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia, contradicts international law principles and international commitments undertaken by Moscow, including the Agreement signed with Georgia on August 12, 2008, as well as the Agreement on its implementation signed on September 8, 2008.
Bulgaria has repeatedly expressed its full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders. We reaffirm our position on South Ossetia and Abkhazia, i.e. Bulgaria does not recognize the new quasi-state formations and the results of the elections held two years ago, and we do not maintain direct contacts with their political leadership.
A solution to the conflicts in Georgia and the Caucasus as a whole, can only be achieved by peaceful means. Bulgaria supports the dialogue within the Geneva Group framework and we believe that the non-use of force is the basis of settling the conflict.
