On the territory of Sukhumi botanical garden will be grown bananas and pineapples. The institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of Abkhazia is going to build special greenhouse on the territory of Sukhumi botanical garden for 2016, where there will be grown exotic plants, among them bananas, pineapple and cocoa tree, reports GHN.
As the director of the Institute of Botany Eduard Gubaz states these species were grown in Abkhazia before but during armed conflict in 1992-93 greenhouses were damaged and nearly 800 species of tropical plants were ravaged.
As Gubaz said Institute of Botany of Abkhazia has permanent connection with many botanical gardens of Europe and Asia and they exchange seedlings of rare plants.
"Growing tropical fruit in greenhouses will enrich farm economy of Abkhazia with diverse species and will interest tourists with exotic," stated Eduard Gubaz.
Institute of Botany of occupied Abkhazia exists on the basis of Sukhumi Botanical Garden from 1994. There are carried out researched in three direction, there are: introduction (bringing the plant in the region where there are unusual climatic conditions for the plant), flower breeding and dendrology.
Flora of Sukhumi botanical garden consists nearly 2000 species of plants, among them 319 species are endemic breeds Kolkhida that grow only in Black Sea regions of Abkhazia, Adjara and Turkey, 125 species grow only in Abkhazia.
