Tbilisi Main Department and the Counter-terrorist Centre of the Interior Ministry carried out a special operation and arrested famous Georgian footballer Giorgi Demetradze in suspicion of money extortion.
Demetradze and two other persons, Davit Gagnidze and Kakha Misireli, have been also arrested for alleged involvement in the crime. Reportedly, the police took 40,700 dollar from the detainees, which they extorted from Davit Peikrishvili . Peikrishvili had won 140,000 dollar during the football championship via personal bet.
Police say Demetradze and other suspects had contact with a former convict, Vato Kipiani, who left Georgia after being released from prison. Kipiani contacted Davit Gagnidze, Giorgi Demetradze and Kakha Misireli trying to extort the won sum from Peikrishvili via blackmailing and intimidation as a `tax for criminal network`.
Vato Kipiani will be charged in absentia, others will be tried here in Georgia.
