On June 7 Georgia-sponsored resolution was adopted by UN General Assambly reiterating the rights of return of all displaced persons and refugees to breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia by vote of 76 in favor, 15 against, with 64 abstentions.
Russian Foreign Ministry's statement concerning the Geneva talks reads that the Georgian-sponsored resolution passed by UN affected badly the Geneva discussions.
The Russian Foreign Ministry upheld the position of secessionist republics on this matter. Breakaway regions representatives refuse to discuss issues related with return of IDP's.
Russia always was strongly against of the resolution, reiterating that Georgia is "pushing" this "politically motivated" issue annually at the UN General Assembly, and this is "counterproductive", as does not help solve problems, because its goal is not to improve the situation of displaced persons, but divert attention from the real work and to use the UN Assembly for anti-Russian propaganda.
"Abkhazia and S.O. delegations are protesting against this. They demand to remove from the agenda of Geneva talks this question and refuse to discuss it, until Georgia will not stop presenting senseless documentations in New York for refugees' conditions. The Russian Federation upheld the position of these independent Republics, "- the official statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russian Federation reads.
