Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili approves the new draft constitution, which is under discussion at parliament and at various levels and said the current composition of the parliament will adopt the document soon.
Saakashvili said the speculations of some politicians that this parliament was not authorized to adopt constitutional amendments, were groundless because even the last elections of local governments proved that the rating of the ruling party and the current parliament was very high.
President said that after the corrections to the draft constitution, the parliament would adopt it.
`Constitutional commission, which was staffed by the majority of the opposition, drafted a new constitution project. When the constitution was amended in 2004 and the authority of the president was shared on the prime minister thus growing the authority of the executive government, I announced publicly that in a few years we would move on a European type of constitution. I deliberately avoided being involved in the discussion of the project; I wanted to discuss the result of their work. Soon the commission will present a new model of constitution, which was already approved by the Council of Europe and an international conference held in Munich a few days ago,` Saakashvili said.
