The new version of the Georgia's Constitution will be handed over to the President today.
The State Constitutional Commission ratified the final version of the draft of constitutional amendments with 44 votes for and 3 against on July 19.
The draft was not supported by member of the parliamentary minority Jondi Baghaturia, member of the Liberty Institute Levan Ramishvili, and Chairman of the Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) Tamar Khidasheli.
According to Baghaturia, he did not support the draft as he thought it was hastily voted. The MP assumes the voting should have been held in September. Khidasheli claimed that the new constitution would increase the role of the government instead of the Parliament. Besides, she said the Venice Commission did not agree with some points in the draft either.
"However, I think the draft is much better than the current constitution. Though I think the Commission could do much more," Khidasheli said. As for Ramishvili, he restrained from commenting.
The President will decide himself when to hand over the draft to the Parliament. Based on the proposed amendments the Georgian Cabinet of Ministers will be staffed according to the decision of parliament rather than President. Thus the balance will be restored between authorities of the parliament and president.
