Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili thanked the Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance Khatuna Kalmakhelidze for the effective reforming of the penitentiary system.
President went to the ministry today and spoke the problems in the penitentiary system, which have been uprooted. He said the system had serious challenges, including the control of crime from prison, mediation of convicts in the `return` of robbed things, sell of robbed things, there were cells the doors of which were not locked, there were crime bosses and the prison administration in deal with them.
`We succeeded so that the crime is no longer controlled from prison and we passed through very serious fights. Bacho Akhalaia imposed rule of law in prisons and Khatuna Kalmakhelidze has reinforced this process even better,` Saakashvili said and thanked the minister for good work.
President spoke about the improved conditions of convicts, the families of which were no longer obliged to feed them from outside. `The fact that no `hand overs` [food delivery to convivist] take place and that convicts are fed just like soldiers in the army is a serious achievement,` Saakashvili said and spoke about the statistic, which showed that the crime was reduced.
`Mothers released their children outside without worrying about their fate and this is the outcome of your work. According to the surveys, the level of crime in Georgia is lower than in Ukraine and Russia. This is because we spend more money on reforms,` President said and called upon the ministry staff to keep on working in the same manner, promising help from the government.
