Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili and Catholicos Patriarch of All Georgia His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II arrived Wednesday at Mukhatgverdi Fraternal Cemetery, where they laid flowers at graves of soldiers killed in the Russia-Georgia war in August 2008.
Saakashvili thanked families of the soldiers for their courage and firmness. The president and the patriarch paid their tributes to teh soldiers killed in teh war and viewed the church opened at the cemetery.
`We saw how these families stood all kinds of pressure. This is the biggest monument that has been devoted to the memory of our guys. Heroes are never born randomly in random families`, Saakashvili said. He also added that Georgia is proud of heroism and selflessness of Georgian soldiers.
`What happened two years ago, was expected, as well as unexpected. The enemy was getting ready for the war during three years, that has been confirmed and they themselves are not hiding it any more`, Saakashvili said.
The second anniversary of the Russia-Georgia war is on August 8.
