At the second anniversary of the Russia-Georgia war Dmitri Medvedev unexpectedly visited Sukhumi. After Russia`s recognition of Georgia`s two occupied regions, this is the Russian President`s firs visit to occupied Abkhazia.
In Sukhumi Dmitri Medvedev met with separatist leader Sergei Bagapsh and talked to him about significance of development of bilateral relationships. The Russian President promised Sukhumi to continue assisting in fields of security and economy in the future.
About recognition of independence of the occupied regions, Dmitri Medvedev reiterated that it was a right decision.
Medvedev also viewed the Russian military base in Abkhazia and promised support to soldiers.
`The events that took place two years ago, incited a number of political processes including recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. That was a difficult, but as time has proved, right decision. If not the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the situation would have been absolutely different today and we would not have been able to have coffee here. It is important to continue relationships in economic and social spheres. We will assist developing cooperation with you in economic as well as security fields`, Medvedev told Bagapsh.
