The body of the first lieutenant, company commander of 31st battalion Mukhran Shukvani, serving in peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan.
Mikheil Shukvani died in an explosion during fulfilling his duties in the Helmand Province.
During the same operation, Corporal Alika Gitolendia from the 31st Battalion also exploded on the IED (improvised explosive device). Corporal Gitolendia lost both lower limbs. His health condition is critical. Corporal Gitolendia was serving in the Georgian Armed Forces since 2007.
It is with sadness that the Ministry of Defence of Georgia must announce that a Georgian officer performing a peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan was killed. Ministry of Defence of Georgia expresses condolences to the family of 1st lieutenant, company commander of 31st battalion Mukhran Shukvani. Lt. Shukvani was born in 1982. He served in GAF from 2006. He also participated in the U.S. Iraqi mission. During his service at the GAF he was granted with Distinguished Service Medal - third rank, Distinguished Service Medal for the combat wound, and medal - "Devoted to Homeland".
The family of late Lt. Shukvani will receive the social assistance determined by the Georgian legislation. "We express our deepest regret and extend our condolences to the family of Lt Shukvani, his relatives, his fellow combatants and to our country. We lost one of the best servicemen of the Georgian Armed Forces and it is very hard and painful for us. The injuries of Corporal Gitolendia are also very serious. He lost both of lower limbs," - declared Deputy Chief of Joint Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces, Col. Arsen Tsukhishvili. "The Ministry of Defence of Georgia will do its best to transfer the body of the deceased soldier as soon as possible. We'll also take care of his rehabilitation. This is a very dangerous military operation where the Georgian military are performing their tasks honorably," - declared Deputy Defence Minister Mr. Nodar Kharshiladze at the special briefing held at the Defence Ministry.
