Today on October 3 Germany marks 20-th anniversary of its unification. On October 3 of 1990 GDR joined to the main law of the Federative Republic of Germany, this was a final reunification of both countries, which were divided during 28 years (from August 13 of 1961 to November 9 of 1989) by the Berlin wall, GHN reports.
On June 16 of 1990 Helmut Kohl Chancellor of the Federative Republic of Germany and Mikhail Gorbachov, President of USSR signed the agreement in Zhelesnovodsk, that USSR was consent for the reunification of the Germany and its NATO membership. Germany took an obligation for economic cooperation with USSR. This document laid the foundation for the unification of Germany.
At the morning of August 13 of 1961 the Public Agency of the Germany announced to the public the Warsaw agreement. At that day the border was laid between two Germanys, and the country was divided. The Berlin wall was constructed - a symbol of cold war. It was 6 meters high. The border guards of GDR were ordered to open fire on everybody who attempted cross the border.
First victim of the Berlin wall was Rudolf Urban, dweller of the East Germany. He jumped from the window of the house near to this border. He was shot dead. The last victim was 20-years old Cris Geffroy, who attempted to climb the wall on February 6 of 1989, 2 weeks before the abolition of the order No 101 (according to which fire is to be opened upon attempting to violate the border).
The length of the Berlin wall was 155 km; it was guarded by 600 dogs. 302 posts were functioning along the border.
