The citizen of Georgia, Babutsa Gorgadze has faced her first trial at the Malaysian court today. At the first hearing, the woman was charged with one of the gravest charges of Malaysian legislation - Article 39 b of the MCC, drug trafficking. The representative of the international organization Amnesty International failed to attend the hearing.
The second hearing on her case is supposed to be held next week.
As for the other detainee Darejan Kokhtashvili, who was arrested together with Gorgadze, her trial will be held on November 8, 2010. Both defendants are held in custody on different islands of Malaysia and they have not yet had a chance to meet each other.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Grigol Vashadze said he has not had a telephone conversation with his Malaysian counterpart so far.
The two citizens of Georgia were detained by Malaysian police last week and charged them with drug smuggling, which envisages highest measure of punishment according to the local legislation.
