Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili met Wednesday with Moldova`s acting president Mihai Ghimpu. Four days ahead to the parliamentary elections in the county, the Moldovan ruling team invited Saakashvili.
Reportedly, at the same time, for the same reason, visits of Romanian and some other European leaders to Moldova were postponed.
After the meeting, Mikheil Saakashvili and Mihai Ghimpu held a joint press conference, during which Ghimpu awarded the Georgian president with Moldova`s highest award - the order of the Republic for deepening Georgia-Moldova relations and assistance to the population affected by floods in Moldova in 2010.
After that, Mikheil Saakashvili also met with Moldovan Prime Minister Vladimir Filat and discussed joint projects with him. Saakashvili also met the man, with whom he used to work at a customs checkpoint between Czech Republic and Hungary in 1986.
Later, the president visited Obilen in the vicinity of Chisinau, where he proposed to construct a Georgian village for flood-affected population. Nine Georgian streets will open in the village, where by support of the Georgian government, nine blocks of apartments are being constructed.
"It`s a great honour for me to receive this award. This is a sign of big friendship, brotherhood and closeness between the Georgian and the Moldovan peoples.
"Today, like never, Moldova has a greatest prospect for rapid European integration. None of other countries of the Eastern Partnership is so close to us, as Moldova. None of teh countries have more chance than Moldova. We support you and it is our pragmatic interest to see you successful, because it would bring success to us, to Ukraine and to everyone.
"I have arrived here not for supporting any political party but this first of all is my support for the Moldovan people", Saakashvili said.
