Today on December 22, 19 years passed since the beginning of the "Tbilisi war". In 1991 of December 22 from the early morning the armed confrontation started at the Rustaveli avenue central road of the city, between First President of Georgia Zviad Gamsakhurdia and oppositional armed formation.
The "Tbilisi war" that lasted 15 days by the unofficial data victimized more than 100 people. As result of an artillery attack central buildings of the city were damaged: building of the Parliament, Tbilisi classic gymnasium building, the hotel "Tbilisi", Art house and other buildings.
The armed clash accomplished when President Gamsakhurdia and his allays fled the country, after this the civil war started.
The supporters of ex-president Gamsakhurdia said, the armed confrontation was provoked by the opposition-inclined part of the National Guardia. After Zviad Gamsakhurdia leave the country the ruling over the country decided the Military Council. The Military Council consisted with ex Prime Minister Tengiz Sigua; ex Defense Minister Tengiz Kitovani and the armed formation head Jaba Ioseliani.
The winners' triumvirate decided that the political figure of Eduard Shevardnadze, ex Foreign Minister who at that moment lived in Moscow, was able to establish peace in the country. They elected him as a State Council's chairperson on March 10.
