In the near future Ukraine will establish a new Constitutional Assembly, President Viktor Yanukovych said at a meeting of the Commission on Strengthening Democracy and the Rule of Law on Thursday in Kyiv, informs GHN referring to UKRINFORM.
Yanukovych believes the Constitutional Assembly should play the role of an effective consultative mechanism that would "match the position of experts on constitutional law, political experts, politicians and the public".
"Together we will go all the way from the debate on key issues about the reform of the political system to the specific provisions of the updated basic law," Yanukovych added.
He recalled that the documents of many European institutions, including the PACE, the Venice Commission and the European Parliament speak about the need for constitutional reform in Ukraine.
The head of state stressed that the process of constitutional reform will be open and legitimate, and the goal of refreshing the basic law is "the formation of a balanced system of representative democracy of the European model".
