Christian-Democrats are accusing the Penitential Ministry in breach of legislation. The Human Rights Committee of the political party presented today the result of monitoring. For the last year the pre term release of prisoners was not performed even for the minimal quantity of prisoners. GHN was informed about this from the political party.
Tamaz Bakuridze, chairman of the party said according to the article 40 of the legislation about prisoners all prisoners regardless of the severity of its sentence are entitled to the pre term release on demand after some period of sentence.
"In the Georgian penitential system the absence of the principle of the pre term release of prisoners on demand violates the rights of prisoners. In 18 prisons of the Georgian Republic from 23 800 prisoners 5 000 prisoners were to be released on demand, this amounts to 21%. In fact this figure is 200 prisoners. From the total amount only 0.04% of prisoners were released according this principle.
Moreover among the prisoners who are entitled for this principle are elders, severely ill and especially ill prisoners. As well those prisoners are who are sentenced for non violent crimes and who did not violate the internal order.
Christian-Democrats are demanding immediate release those prisoners whose cases are in accordance with the criteria of this legislation.
