Seems like Bagapsh faces hard times. This hardship will be nothing to compare with the elections of 2004, GHN reports.
The "Caucasian Echo" informs that Moscow demands 160 cubic kilometers from the Abkhazian territory - all Gagra region.
The new challenge for Bagapsh is connected with the decision of demarcation process of the Russian -Abkahzian border. At this time the negotiations are pending behind the closed doors. The information was leaked from Abkhazian Parliament that Russia's vision in connection with the border line is not amiable for Sokhumi.
Russia gets one more territorial bomb at the background of Kuril Islands dispute with Japan. For Abkhazians such loss is near to the catastrophe. No need to study the public opinion poll for this question, it is clear. Too much blood was shed for this small land little before during the Georgian Abkhazian war in 1992-93. Now they will not reconcile with the giving away of this part even to the only real partner in the world to Russia.
There was a lot of financial support from Russia to Abkhazia for the last 2 years, but no stable economy seen yet. However the local bureaucracy enriched up to the teeth. Moscow in fact is "investing to the local public officials" to get something in turn - the best part of the resort for instance. Should be noted this is very prosperous business. For one Russian Ruble three governmental resort houses were passed to Russian Federation - elite rest house of Beria, Khrushev and Gorbachov. The Rosneft as well was given the exclusive right for the oil mining. But now the new demarcation line will be a sever blow and no argumentations will be found in Abkhazia to justify Russia's appetite.
Now Bagapsh fights in between two fires. If he passes land to Russia - the destabilization and loss of Office guarantied. If he will not recede - Russian support diminished and the destabilization in any case will follow. The budget of the country for 70% based on Russian donations.
One should hope that someone jokes about Gagra in Kremlin...
