The day of restoration of autocephaly is celebrated by Georgian Orthodox Church today on March 25. In this occasion in all Georgian Churches the festive divine services will be served, GHN reports.
The Georgian autocephaly was restored in March 25 of 1917 and the ruling of Patriarchate was introduced. The first Catholicos Patriarch was elected Kirion II. The Georgian Church got the autocephaly in 457 from the Antiokhian Church.
The autocephaly was abolished in 1811 by the Russian Emperor Alexander I. He ordered to abolish the Georgian Patriarchate and the Georgian Church as an eparchy was subdued to the Russian Church Synod.
In 1989 the autocephaly of Georgian Church was approved by Constantinople Patriarchate. From the 1977 the Patriarch of All Georgia is His Holiness and Beatitude Cathalicos Patriarch of All Georgia and mitropolite of Tskhum Abkhazia and Bichvinta Illia Second
