Today on April 9 20 years passed since the official restoration of Georgian statehood. The Georgian Higher Council passed the "Georgian Statehood Independence Restoration Act" on April 9 of 1991.
In connection with this event in the hotel "Court Yard Marriot" the conference will be held "20 years of independence - achievements and mistakes". Moreover the meeting with participants of the April 9 of 1989 events will be conducted in the Freedom House at 12:00.
On March 31 of 1991 as a result of the referendum, Zviad Gamsakhurdia, Chair of the Supreme Council declared the restoration of Georgian independence. The independence was restored based on the Georgian Independence Act of 1918 of May 26.
The passing of this Act in 1991 in April 9 has a symbolic nature. As on April 9 of the 1989 at the dawn, at 04:00 on the main road of the city Rustaveli Avenue the peaceful protesters were violently dissolved by the USSR Army. People were demanding detachment from USSR. They were praying with candles in their hands. Russian Army used against them heavy military technique, tanks, tear gas CS (from the consequences of which many died in hospitals in a passing of several month). Many people were killed on the street as a result of throng, army killed many of them with digging tools.
