Georgia likes to show itself, as a country with big and successful economy, nevertheless in fact this country did not determine yet what way to choose for a real development, Thomas Patrick Lowndes de Waal (born 1966, Nottingham, England), a British journalist, writer and an expert on the Caucasus said in conversation with "Foreign press".
"One can find advertisings in the Financial Times, Economist and CNN, where it was mentioned that Georgia is reformer No 1 in the world. Nevertheless all who where in Georgia have seen that all this is a clever PR campaign, "- he said.
He noted that Georgia has a big problems with economics, despite of reforms the state is too far from the accomplishing of the economic processes. The inflation rate approximately reached 14%, inflation for the food products is 30%. The government left the agriculture without due attention. As a result the reach agriculture country in the past now imports 80 % of agriculture products.
At the same time he said the Georgia is a very strange case. As the population here is only 5 mn. The country is very poor but has attracted interest, because here is a young elite group with the Western education having ties in Washington. This was presupposed with the close relations of Bush and Mikhail Saakahsvili. Despite of the 2008 conflict which make the relations more distant, many in the West believe that Georgia needs some support. Georgia is considered as a Anti-Russia. Georgia is a country which makes efforts for reforms but it still has to do many ones. This country in no case may be a mode for the democracy - the expert said.
He said the Georgian people are not able to make wonders and in Georgia there is no system for control and balance. This makes Washington and Brussels to push Georgian elite for democracy and responsibility.
