Eka Beselia, leader of the "Solidarity for illegal prisoners" said that the legislation on religious status might be suspended.
This may happen with regard to the public opinion, or amendments should be prepared to the passed law, but this should be agreed with Patriarch.
"The Patriarchy is not against the granting of a status of a juridical entity of a public law to religious organizations in Georgia, but it is necessary to take into consideration the interests of Georgian Orthodox Church. If the government does not wish to break the deadlock and wishes confrontation, this will be very dangerous. This is in favor of other countries interests, but not in the interests of own country, "- Beselia said after she was out of the Patriarchy.
She said in the Patriarchy lawyers should talked about the above mentioned question and she suggested own opinion on this respect to representatives of Georgian Patriarchy.
"I have extremely negative position in this respect. It is very important to take into consideration the decision of a Holy Synod. This decision will be soon open for public. The position of the Georgian Orthodox Church should be supported by congregation. This question is very important. The Concordat (about the special role of Orthodox Church in Georgia) which is agreed between government and the Church denotes directly that government should ask opinion of an Orthodox Church. Nevertheless the passing of the Bill denotes granting the same rights to other religions as the Orthodox Church has, " - Beselia said.
