Nestan Kirtadze, Labor Party's International Secretary applied to the Georgian government to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Children in connection with the increase of prices for textbooks.
Kirtadze said the increase of the prices for schoolbooks and accessories is not only a social problem and not only the question of the "rights". This is a problem of general politics in our state and is connected with the future in our country. Particularly government's PR campaign as if the prices for the school books are minimal is a lie. IN fact they are enormous and differ from GEL100 to 260. She noted that the government initiated a new educational program under which it is obligatory to purchase new school books each year. This gives a hand only to the governmental clans and monopolistic tendencies in this area.
Such policy makes impossible for the middle layer of the public to provide its children even with the secondary education. The Labor Party demands to abolish customs duties for schoolbooks to soften the problem.
Kirtadze applied to government to pass the schoolbooks and necessary inventory to socially deprived people free of charge. She as well applied to UN CRC and UN Office in Tbilisi to hold a monitoring for the secondary education social security questions.
