The Russian Delegation representative at WTO talks Maxim Medvedkov said that Georgian and Russian delegations have reached an agreement, which aims at administering cargo trade. The project does not contradict the principles of the WTO, it envisages involvement of independent companies in the audit of the trade data and the company will be allowed to assist Georgian and Russian customs in the process of administering.
The actual agreement was reached concerning the cargo monitoring at Abkhazian and S.O. borders. Namely trade relations of Russian Federation with these breakaway republics for Georgian party were a hindering point at the WTO talks.
Medvedkov as well underlined that the agreement is not "outside of the main Russian position". The parties agreed that they will invite independent companies for audit about the trade data. This information Russia and Georgia will be passing to the integrated WTO database.
The delegation of Georgian government has left for Geneva to agree the final details of the agreement on Russia's membership in the World Trade Organization, which at the same time, determines the procedures of international monitoring on three points of Georgia`s northern borders. The document was prepared and proposed to the sides for discussion by the government of Switzerland, as the mediator country between Georgia and Russia since August war, when the two countries cut diplomatic ties.
After eight days of thinking, Russia has agreed to sign the document, which allows Georgia for the first time since 1993, control the cargo transportation across the internationally recognized borders of Georgia via international monitoring. It took the Russian authorities a whole week, to make out what the agreement aimed at and it laid new responsibilities on Russia.
The process of negotiations ended successfully for Georgia. The delegation signed the agreement only after the interests of the country were protected in it.
Late last night, Russian news agencies released the statement by the head of the Russian delegation in these negotiations.
