20 years ago on December 22 in 1991 at 7:30 morning in Tbilisi at the Rustaveli Avenue the armed conflict happen between the supporters of Georgian First President Zviad Gamsakhurdia and the opposition.
The opposition equipped with arms encircled the Parliament building and tried to invade. During the Tbilisi war which lasted 15 days over 100 people died. As a result of gun fire the building in a center of a city were destroyed - the building of Parliament, Tbilisi Classic Gymnasium, the hotel Tbilisi, the Painter House and other buildings.
The Tbilisi war ended, Georgian President Zviad Gamsakhurdia fled the country. These events followed by a civil war in the country. The supporters of Gamsakhurdia believed that the armed confrontation was provoked by the part of the army (National Guardia) which confronted to President. After Gamsakhurdia fled the country the power was taken by a Military Council - Tengiz Sigua, Tengiz Kitovani and the armed formation's head Jaba Ioseiani.
The triumvirate considered Eduard Shevardnadze (back then the Russia's Foreign Minister) as a figure who can establish a peace in our country. In 1992 March 7 Shevardnadze arrived to Georgia and on March 10 he became a head of the State Council.
