It has been reported that two Georgian nationals died on the board of the tanker Edirne in the Adriatic Sea in a shipwreck on January 15th. The tragedy occurred near the coast of the city of Dures. The citizens of Azerbaijan, Turkey, Ukraine and Georgia were on the board of the tanker that drowned. Reportedly, one Azeri citizen has also died.
Turkey`s media says the tanker sailing with the flag of Sierra Leone, carried fuel when the explosion occurred in its container. The tanker was constructed in 1980.
Reports say 12 members oft he crew have survived, most of them were Georgians. The mayor of the city Dures says the survivors were transferred to the city`s hospital, where they are provided necessary treatment.
Georgian National Transport Administration is working to clarify the details of the tragedy.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Nino Kalandadze has commented on the reports today. She said the report about the death of Georgian nations in the catastrophe has not been confirmed, therefore, the ministry would make no official report until the detailed information is received from Ankara.
