Vakhtang Makhniashvili, father of the Georgian girl, who died in yet unclear conditions in Canada three years ago, will not be freed from prison to attend the funerals of his daughter. Makhniashvili`s wife Lela Tabidze has confirmed the report.
The decision was taken on the grounds of Makhniashvili's court-ordered psychiatric assessment. It found he suffered from delusional disorder, potentially brought on by the disappearance of his daughter. Makhniashvili is serving his 6 year-sentence for stabbing three people.
Mariam Makhniashvili disappeared in 2009, three months after arriving in Canada from Georgia; however, her skeletal remains were found last month by two men walking beneath the overpass near Yonge Street and Highway 401. The skeleton was identified as Ms. Makhniashvili earlier this month. Police say there's no evidence to suggest there's anything suspicious about her death, which was caused by a fall from a significant height and would be consistent with an accident or suicide.
But police are still investigating.
The girl will be buried in Toronto tomorrow.
