World leaders participated in the two-day (May 20-21) summit of the North-Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Chicago, US, to discuss international security and issues related to Afghanistan.
Twenty-eight member states of the alliance adopted a future strategy about European anti-missile systems and NATO's ISAF mission in Afghanistan.
Georgia's President Mikheil Saakashvili held last meetings in Chicago. He met with President of Bulgaria Rosen Plevneliev and Prime Minister of Denmark.
Bilateral relations and issues related to eastward expansion of NATO were the main topics of discussions. Anders Fogh Rasmussen, NATO Secretary General and Saakashvili held a joint press briefing.
Rasmussen underlined that no third country could veto over the issue of NATO's expansion. Saakashvili said the alliance was not only the guarantee of Georgia's security but an important motivation for carrying out of democratic reforms.
Karl Lamers, President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly called on 28 NATO member states for accession of Georgia into the military bloc.
Lamers said that Georgia was a successful country in the region that needed support.
