On May 21-22 Prof. Nestan Kirtadze visited Strasbourg during the European Parliament session in the city to speak with partners and supporters about prospects of civil movement Georgian-Abkhazian and Georgian-Ossetian and House.
At the Directorate of Democratic Citizenship and Participation of the Council of Europe Prof. Kirtadze offered Georgian-Abkhazian and Georgian-Ossetian House as a civil coordinator from Georgia at the annual Conference of International Non-Governmental Organizations. Although the Council of Europe is restricted with bureaucratic procedures, representatives of the institution expressed a vital interest in having civil movement as a representative of civil society of modern Georgia. Possibility of patronage for the events, initiatives and projects of Georgian-Abkhazian and Georgian-Ossetian House from the General Secretary of the Council of Europe, Mr. Thorbjorn Jagland, were also discussed during the meeting and Prof. Kirtadze was assured in principal support of the cause of civil movement and further patronage.
Overcoming difficulties of especially busy schedule of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Prof. Kirtadze met with Krzysztof Lisek, Member of the European Parliament from Poland, Vice-Chair of the Subcommittee on Security and Defense. "In times like this, your initiative is key to peace and development in the region" - Mr. Lisek highlighted. He assured Prof. Kirtadze in wholehearted support of mission and aims of Georgian-Abkhazian and Georgian-Ossetian House and suggested organizing a dialogue event on the basis of civil movement platform and concept and the European Parliament this September in Brussels. The planned conference at the European Parliament will (in the best case) host representatives of all parties in the conflict - Georgia, South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Russia as well, at least all of the parties will be officially invited to participate in the open dialogue in the framework of possibilities for peaceful and mutually beneficial development in the region via economic, social, cultural and academic integration.
Apart of participating himself, Mr. Lisek promised to attract highest attention to the event and assist with its structural shaping.
Therefore, Georgian-Abkhazian and Georgian-Ossetian House with support of the European Parliament will become de facto unique, recognized platform for evolvement of dialogue and cooperation between counterparts in the region, what is crucially important for its prosperous future.
Prof. Kirtadze, prominent Georgian historian, was also a guest at the opening of the exhibition about Byzantine culture and art at the European Parliament, where she held productive meeting with University of Sofia "St.Clement D'Ohrid", Center of Researches Slavo-Byzantines "Ivan Duichev". Without understanding the past, future will be always dim and full of repeated mistakes, as they say, - Prof. Kirtadze sees importance of historical research and knowledge as one of the bases for successful policy-making.
