'September' will be vying with other 56 films to scoop an oscar at the Student Academy Awards this June. The film, directed by 20-year-old Georgian graduate student Vako Kirkitadze, has been nominated in the 'Honorary Foreign Film Award' category.
The film describes the postwar situation in Georgia after August 2008. Its main theme is the human tragedy caused by the war and it portrays a little Georgian boy's attitude to the war and his relationship with Russian soldiers.
"The film is about a boy who fights against the Army with his purposefulness and dignity and defeats it," says Vako Kirkitadze. Zuka Chachua, 12, plays the main character.
Vako Kirkitadze is currently studying at Tbilisi State Institute of Theatre and Cinema. He shot the film as part of the summer cinema school project run by Tbilisi-based company Sineteki. 8 short films have been produced as part of this project.
"We started shooting the film before the war and wanted to call it 'Farewell to Arms', Zura Magalashvili, its producer, says. "We had a kind of apprehension and the war soon erupted," he added.
Merab Gegchkori, PR manager, said the project was designed to teach the graduate students all the practical aspects of making a film. But some of the films have proved surprisingly successful. Tornike Bziava's film 'April Frost' has won a jury special award at the International Short Film Festival in Clermont-Ferrand, France. The film is about the 9th April tragedy when 16 Georgians were killed in the brutal dispersal of a peaceful demonstration by the Soviet Army.
Student Academy Awards are given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to filmmakers at undergraduate and graduate levels, mostly in the United States. There are four categories in which these awards are given i.e. alternative (experimental film), animation, documentary and narrative.
The 'Honorary Foreign Film Award' category was introduced in 1981. The award in this category is given, on an annual basis, to an outstanding student filmmaker from outside the United States.
