`Georgia keeps on developing. My country will never return to previous index and we will never give up,` Georgian president announced at the Atlantic Council on April 15, 2010. Mikheil Saakashvili delivered a speech at the Atlantic Council in Washington and spoke about the challenges and obstacles, which the country had to overcome on its way to development. President said the government had progress and mistakes too; however, he was proud that Georgia had successfully passed the tests and now this small country had a possibility to take part in the event dedicated to solution of global problems.
President mentioned the opposition demonstrations, which in the beginning became the topic of discussion and criticism of his government; however, he said this wave of protests only speeded up democratic development of the country.
`It`s an honour and pleasure obviously to address you. I have come to Washington to participate in the Nuclear Security Summit, that president Obama hosted this week. I was honoured to join with him and three dozen other world leaders to address the great dangers posed by the nuclear weapons materials proliferation trafficking. I want to comment president Obama for underscoring the urgency of this universal threat, for his personal leadership of this effort particularly whole time he is facing such a demanding domestic agenda. His vision of the nuclear free world is the one I personally share, and that summit was the first step toward the long-term goal. Some here wondered why this week summit includes not only large nuclear powers, but also countries like Georgia; we have no nuclear weapons, no nuclear energy and no nuclear materials. Answer to this question requires a short journey in the history of my country,` Saakashvili said and recollected the political and economic process, which was underway since 2003 Rose Revolution in Georgia. He said when he came to power, Georgia was the country with no authority in international political arena, it was a country was police was engrossed in corruption and people suffered the results of the criminal rule on themselves. It was the country darkness, where people had power only five hours a day even in winter, it was the country which had failed to handle any challenge and our goal was to overcome this stage of development, Saakashvili said and added that the Rose Revolution was not only the demonstration of waving flags, but it was a real change for real business.
