Former minister of internal affairs of Georgia, who resigned after the prison scandal prior to the parliamentary elections, has posted an address to Georgian people on his Facebook page. Akhalaia says he is responsible for every act and decision taken adding he did not flee Georgia, but went abroad for a specific period of time.
`The representative of the Georgian Dream has intensified dirty swindle campaign against me recently/ One part of the politicians releases speculations as if I am guilty in human torture and corruption, due to which I fled the country to avoid justice. I want to announce publicly that I left the country temporarily, because I did not want anybody from the current ruling team to think without grounds that I would somehow disturb the free conduct of parliamentary elections and the process of power transition. Even though the policy of the Georgian dream significantly differs from the country`s interests, I think that the elections were very important stage for consolidation of reforms and I wish that new political power did not scatter the democratic achievement. I don`t speak on behalf of any political group, however, I should underline that I have always shared the policy of President Saakashvili and with my work I always served the state of Georgia and its citizens.
We had to conduct the most difficult and hard battle against the deeply rooted criminal networks. The process was in most cases dangerous for my team-mates and their families, but we always believed and we do so now, that it was one of the decisive fights against the organized crime.
I believe that despite biased or unbiased gaps, we affected the criminal world and today Georgia is free of mafia networks and our children live in secure environment. I want to remind you all that rule of criminals in prisons causes violation of human rights not only inside but also outside the prison and it directly organizes and controls the intensification of crime outside the prison, which is dangerous for any Georgian citizen.
We promoted reforms in the Defense System, including the improvement of living conditions to our soldiers and growth of defensibility, modernization of armament, its industry and NATO integration. My key goal was to protect the peace and security in case of any provocation from the occupant state. I am proud that Georgian army is one of the most trusted institutions in the country. It`s a pleasure, when Georgian soldiers serving in international missions are hailed from our international partners. One of the most important principles of my work was to protect the interests of our country.
I deeply believe that human freedom and democracy are the fundament of Georgia`s success and there is no alternative.
I want to address Georgian people - I am responsible for each of my activities, each of my steps. Though the allegations of the Georgian Dream members voiced recently against me prove that the process against me will not be free from politics, and even though I think that their goal is to perform a political show instead of fulfilling their generous promises, I have returned to Georgia and I am announcing that I am prepared to answer any question about my activities if investigation is conducted.
Georgia is the country where I was born, brought-up and I feel greatest responsibility before my country and each of its citizens. I want to thank president Saakashvili that I was given an opportunity to participate in the conduct of vital though painful reforms. I have never intended to leave my country and whatever I do afterwards, my key principle will be Georgia`s success and progress, commonwealth and peace for Georgian people,` Akhalaia wrote.
