The CIA has announced it is to launch an "exploratory" investigation into the conduct of its former director David Petraeus.
Petraeus resigned last week over allegations of an extramarital affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell.
US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta has requested the Joint Chiefs of Staff to review ethics training for military officers and look for new methods to keep them out of the spotlight.
The announcement comes as the retired general prepares to testify at a closed-door congressional hearing concerning the attack on the US consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi.
The September 11 attack killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.
Petraeus has denied any security breeches as result of his affair.
The CIA says it does not "presuppose any particular outcome."
