Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze held high-profile meetings in the president of the UN General Assembly of the 64th session Ali Abdussalam Treki and UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon.
Georgian Senior Diplomat held a summarizing briefing after these meetings. He answered the questions of journalists, which mostly touched Georgia-Russia relations and the situation on the occupied Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions.
`The situation on the occupied territories is alarming. Russians are opening military bases there and when we speak about the process of de-militarization, this should be taken into consideration. In addition, situation in the human right defence sector exceeds all international norms, the right to study on native language is also violated and the history is deteriorated,` Grigol Vashadze announced.
The minister said the protection of the human rights is the top issue of the Geneva international consultations and that this is the only place where Georgia and Russia contacted each other.
`Russian government claims that they will never talk with the democratically elected government of Georgia. We have no contacts; we are not talking to each other if we count out Geneva talks. If it comes to Georgia, we are ready to talk to Russia any time and anywhere. We are not afraid to talk. Obviously Russia is not coming to the table because of a simple reason - they have cornered themselves,` Grigol Vashadze said.
