Police are asking that Vakhtang Makhniashvili be required to undergo a psychiatric assessment before he can be released on bail, following his arrest Friday for allegedly stabbing his neighbour.
`It`s something that police will be requesting through the Crown attorney,` said Det. Sgt. Dan Nealon. `Understanding that he could probably be suffering from some sort of breakdown, it's something that we need to address before he's released back into the community.`
Makhniashvili, father of Mariam Makhniashvili, who has been missing since September, is accused of stabbing a 26-year-old man, who lived in the apartment unit directly across from Makhniashvili on the seventh floor of 20 Shallmar Blvd.
Makhniashvili's arrest came after months of media attention following the disappearance of his 17-year-old daughter, Mariam.
The search started for the teen on Sept. 14 when her younger brother said she vanished after walking with him to Forest Hill Collegiate Institute
