EU Special Representative for South Caucasus Peter Semneby arrived in Tbilisi last night. Semneby told journalists at the Tbilisi airport that he came to learn about pre-election situation in Georgia.
`I intend to meet representatives of the authorities, political parties, election administration and to discuss the situation before the elections,` Semneby said. According to him, the EU expressed its interest in holding fair and impartial elections in Georgia.
`We are doing our best to provide fair elections in Georgia. In the frames of the OSCE observer mission, a very respectful delegation will arrive to monitor these elections. Democratic conduct of the election is very significant for the next parliamentary and presidential elections. For this each political party should treat the issue correctly,` Peter Semneby said.
During the visit Semneby will also hold a series of meetings in connection with the study of the situation in conflict regions of Georgia, as well as he will get acquainted with the work of the EU monitoring mission.
Georgia will hold local elections May 30.
