The Georgian government released an action
plan for the transition to digital broadcasting. Key principles and
methodology of the upcoming process have been outlined in the document as a
result of several years of work.
According
to Mediafreedomwatch the document has been drafted with the support of the
European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and by considering
recommendations from the Georgian National Communications Commission (GNCC) and
non-governmental organizations.
In
2006, the member states of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
agreed to transition to digital broadcasting on June 17th, 2015. The majority
of those countries have already switched over.
According
to the plan, the transition to digital broadcasting in Georgia will be carried
out through the adoption of legislative regulations, technical standards, etc.
The Agency for Digital Broadcasting is to be formed under the Ministry of
Economy and Sustainable Development, which will inform the public,
broadcasters, potential investors and companies importing equipment about
important aspects of the reform and the necessary actions. This also means
providing assistance to vulnerable families.
