Statement by NATO Secretary General on the so-called elections in Abkhazia, Georgia

NATO does not recognize the election held on 24 August in the Georgian region of Abkhazia, reports GHN. This election does not contribute to a peaceful and lasting settlement of the situation in Georgia. NATO Allies do not recognize the Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions of Georgia as independent states. The Alliance reiterates its full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders.
