"Integration of Georgia with western states was directed not towards European Union but NATO military alliance," reads the report "Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova; way to NATO through European Union," prepared by the Center of International Journalistic and Research of informational agency "Rossia Segodja", reports GHN.
"In 1995 Georgia joined the program "Partnership for Peace." Tbilisi like other participants took the responsibility for formation and planning of national defense budget with the aim of democratic control of armed forces. Georgia also took the responsibility to participate in peacekeeping and humanitarian operations carried out under aegis of NATO," reads the research.
Till 1996 Georgia already took part in 20 operations of NATO, after this the activity of Tbilisi grows: in 1997 already participated in 70 partner operations, in 1998 in120 operations, and 1999 in 140 operations...from 1999 Georgia joined the "Process of Planning and Analysis" initiated by NATO; the aim of the process is to reach operative compliance of military units and NATO united armed forces of partner countries. This process provoked changes in foreign politics of Georgia: first of all Georgia left CIS collective security treaty organization and choose pro-American foreign orientation," reads of report.
It means that "from the outset the integration of Georgia with western countries was directed not towards European Union that could be explained with motives of economic relations, but towards NATO."
The report reads that in formation of Georgian army big attention is paid to training of command and general staff in military institutes of NATO countries: "they are trained with the perspective that they will take high positions in state structure and armed forces. It will guarantee the continuation of pro-western course," consider authors of the report.
