NATO Summit is held in Newport, Wales, Great Britain on the 4th and 5th of September 2014. On the first day of the Summit a meeting of the countries taking part in the ISAF operation was held at the level of the heads of delegations. The meeting was attended by the President of Georgia, Mr Giorgi Margvelashvili who held a bilateral meeting with the NATO Secretary General, Mr Anders Fogh Rasmussen, reports GHN based on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A meeting of the foreign ministers of the NATO member countries with the foreign ministers of the aspirant countries within the 28+4 format (NATO+Georgia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina) was held on the 4th of September. The Georgian Foreign Minister provided her colleagues with detailed information regarding the progress that has been achieved in terms of Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic integration. The Minister also discussed the situation in the occupied territories and the crisis in Ukraine. The member states emphasized Georgia's progress towards Euro-Atlantic integration. The Allies were unequivocal in stating that a package of special measures due to be adopted by the heads of State on the 5th of September is designed to speed up Georgia's integration with NATO and to increase Georgia's defence capability. Emphasis was placed on the Alliance's firm support for the non-recognition policy with respect to the occupied territories.
Within the framework of the Summit, a meeting of the defence ministers of the NATO member states with the defence ministers of the Alliance's partner countries within the 28+4 format. On the day following the Summit a meeting will be held within the 28+5 format where the Allies will meet partners with enhanced capabilities. The meeting will be attended by the Defence Minister of Georgia, Mr Irakli Alasania.
It needs to be emphasized that Georgia is the only non-member country of NATO taking part in all meetings due to be held by the Allies with non-member countries within the framework of the Summit.
