Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has thanked the government, parliament and people of Canada for their strong support for Ukraine in its struggle for independence and territorial integrity, reports GHN based on Ukrinform.
The head of state said this in his speech at a joint session of the Canadian parliament on September 17.
"Today Ukraine pays a very high price for defending what we believe in - democracy and freedom to choose our own future. For more than two decades we proudly stated that Ukraine gained its independence without shedding a single drop of blood. Today Ukraine is bleeding for its independence and territorial integrity," Poroshenko said.
He said that the Ukrainian people felt very strong support from Canada, for which he said he was sincerely grateful. Poroshenko also thanked Canada for providing non-lethal military assistance to units fighting in the area of the anti-terrorist operation, with financial and technical assistance, as well as for support within international organizations - the UN, NATO and G7.
