The Georgian Foreign Minister, Ms Maia Panjikidze delivered a speech at the session of the UN Security Council, which was summoned at the initiative of the United States to discuss the situation in Iraq.
In her speech, the Georgian Minister focused both on the global and on the regional security issues and stressed on the readiness of Georgia to contribute to security.
Ms Panjikidze expressed strong support to the Iraqi new government in Iraq's striving to insure inclusive political process; and also expressed Georgia's unwavering support for territorial integrity and sovereignty of Iraq, reports GHN based on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"Georgia condemns in the strongest terms all despicable acts of terrorism and violence; the ISIL (Islamic State) poses threat not only to the nations in the Middle East, but also in Europe, North America and beyond", the Minister said.
"Georgia as a reliable ally and capable partner has been consistent in its efforts to ensure security and stability around the globe," she said and noted Georgia's ongoing contribution to ISAF operation in Afghanistan and EU mission in Central African Republic. "Our commitment to the global peace and stability is firm. Georgia fully supports efforts of the coalition to defeat ISIL and to bring peace in the region. We stand ready to provide humanitarian assistance to those who have been affected by brutal actions of terrorist groups".
Furthermore, as the Minister underlined, Georgia's valuable experience from combat missions, as well as successful defense transformation can be effectively used to enhance capabilities of Iraqi and other security forces as they are taking fight against the ISIL. "We look forward to working with the United States and other coalition partners in coming days and weeks to identify areas where Georgia contribution can provide added value," she said.
The session, which was chaired by the U.S. Secretary of State, Mr John Kerry, focused on the issues of joining efforts of the international community against the ISIL. The U.S. Secretary of State thanked every country participating in the Security Council session, who received the U.S. invitation and who is ready to make its own contribution to the process of fighting against terrorism.
"Your presence here indicates that the world community is ready to help Iraq and to confront threats coming from the ISIL", Mr Kerry said.
