EU solidarity on energy issues could be a response to Russia's blackmail in this sphere, Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski has said, reports GHN based on Ukrinform.
"EU solidarity would prevent Russia from carrying out energy blackmail, as it would not stand this blackmail, because its budget would have collapsed," Komorowski said.
He said that energy cooperation between the EU and Russia was "a stick with two ends" where the two sides are interdependent.
Komorowski said that Europe must realize the Polish concept of a European energy union, because "all people feel that Russia is using energy problems or the fact that it is a supplier of energy, especially natural gas, as a kind of political weapon."
He added that many EU countries that are guided by their own business interests are beginning to understand that Russia in its actions is motivated by political rather than economic criteria.
According to Komorowski, today it is important that the EU take steps associated with the strategy of the energy union, in particular, the issue concerns investments for the integration of all EU countries into a single energy system.
