OSCE Chairperson-in-Office and Swiss President Didier Burkhalter, after the killing of a Red Cross employee in Donetsk, has urged all sides to observe the ceasefire, according to a statement posted on the OSCE website on October 2.
Burkhalter reiterated that the ceasefire represented a real opportunity for a sustainable de-escalation of the situation and that to put it at risk would be "irresponsible and deplorable." He also urged all sides "to immediately stop fighting, to strictly observe the ceasefire and to implement the measures agreed upon in the Minsk Protocol of September 5 and the related Memorandum of September 19."
Burkhalter said he was appalled by the killing of ten people in Donetsk and a member of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) after shelling in the city. He also called on all sides to ensure the safety of aid workers and all civilian population.
As reported, at least ten civilians were killed and another 40 people were injured after artillery shelling in Donetsk on October 1. On October 2, new shelling killed an ICRC employee, Swiss national Laurent DuPasquier. A shell preliminarily hit the building of the ICCR office in the center of Donetsk.
