Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili describes the events that occurred in Village Mokhe, Adigeni Region as deplorable and states that all kind of violence is unacceptable.
As the Prime Minister stated today at the government meeting all citizens are equal to the law despite their religion, reports GHN based on press service of the Prime Minister.
According to Irakli Garibashvili the issue has a long story as Christians living in the village say that there was a church on that place once which was demolished and a mosque was built with the ruins.
As the head of the government stated, then during one century it was a culture house and a useless building which was absolutely ignored.
"The local municipality announced a contest to make a library on this place which will serve both Christians and Muslims living in the village. There will be a good cultural institution to avoid a conflict as from one side Christians stated that historically there was a church there, and Muslims stated that there was a mosque", - the Prime Minister stated.
Irakli Garibashvili also explained that he received a request from the Mufti of Samtskhe-Javakheti regarding examination of this issue; however the agency of religious issues is established for addressing such issue that submits recommendation to the government if necessary. According to the Prime Minister the agency has not applied to the government with this issue.
"I have talked with the governor who had communication with the Mufti of the region. It was decided that a small-size residence would be built near the mosque for Mufti with state funds as this was the main request. There is a mosque in the village already and Muslims have no problems in praying, accordingly I think that it was a regular decision to avoid a conflict. Certainly it was outrageous and unacceptable that happened yesterday, damaging police cars with stones. All citizens are equal before the law", - the Prime Minister noted.
According to Irakli Garibashvili the governor of Samtskhe-Javakheti will find out this case from the local population.
"I urge all once again, be it Christian or Muslim population - you are the citizens of our country, you are equal and obligated to obey the law. The state won't allow anyone to abuse your rights", - the Prime Minister stated.
