German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin in a telephone conversation on Friday discussed advisability of a next meeting of the contact group on Ukraine in the near future.

"The Russian President emphasized the need for de-escalation of the situation in Donetsk and Luhansk regions, primarily through real ceasefire and security along the boundary sides, fighting against each other, and provision of urgent humanitarian assistance," the press service said.
In addition, Putin and Merkel stressed the importance of reaching agreement on gas. The parties hope that the upcoming next round of the EU-Ukraine-Russia trilateral talks will be effective October 29 inBrussels.
